Compulsory Use of Laptop Computers
To all students enrolled in the 2025 academic year
Ehime University offers lectures for first-year students in the “Introduction to Information Literacy” course using their own personal computers, lectures using various e-learning materials, distance learning classes, writing reports and papers, registering for classes, checking grades, receiving communications from faculty members, asking questions of faculty members, and so on. In addition, students will have many opportunities to use PCs and the Internet while at the university. In addition, it is essential for students to become proficient in Microsoft Office and other software applications through the use of PCs and the Internet.
In light of this, we have made personal laptop computers mandatory for all new students since 2021. Since the computers may be used in class, please be prepared to bring them with you when instructed to do so by a faculty member.
1. Purpose
The mandatory use of laptop computers will be implemented for the following purposes
1) Producing human resources with ICT utilization skills in an advanced information society
2) Attending advanced lectures using ICT
3) Making various on-campus services, handouts, and submissions paperless
2. Implementation details
Ehime University will promote the following
(1) Enhance classes utilizing computers.
(2) Promote the computerization of various services within the university.
(iii) Improve and enhance the PC usage environment, including wireless LAN (Wi-Fi) facilities on campus.
(4) Students who cannot afford to purchase a computer for financial reasons can borrow a computer.
(5) Ehime University will enter into a comprehensive agreement with Microsoft to support the use of Microsoft Office and other software at no cost to Ehime University members (students, faculty, and staff).

In addition, some courses in the Faculty of Engineering require specific operating systems and interfaces, so please pay attention to the “Performance Recommendations by Ehime University” below and check them carefully.
Please refer to the following “Ehime University’s recommended performance” for purchasing a new computer:
Microsoft office can be installed after enrollment.
For details, please refer to “Microsoft Windows and Office Licensing”.

1 The Faculty of Engineering recommends a PC with 16GB or 8GB memory capacity or a model with memory expansion capability, since some lectures require large amounts of data and calculations, such as lectures using CAD software or data analysis software for second-year students and above.
2 The Electrical and Electronic Engineering course in the Faculty of Engineering requires a Windows model PC equipped with a USB port because the course includes practical experiments in which students connect measuring instruments, etc. to a Windows PC via USB and perform their own measurement and control. (Mac computers are not supported.)
In addition, students in the Mechanical Engineering, Intelligent Systems, Materials Design Engineering, Infrastructural Engineering, and Social Design courses of the Faculty of Engineering will use special software (not compatible with macOS) in drafting lectures and other classes, and will connect their own laptop computers to large displays for work, Therefore, a Windows model PC that can be connected to a display via an HDMI port is required. However, the PC itself does not need to have an HDMI port if it can be connected to an external display with an HDMI input using a USB Type C conversion adapter or similar.
3 The Faculty of Engineering does not recommend Mac models due to lectures (experiments, practical training, etc.).
Licensing of Microsoft Windows and Office
Ehime University has a blanket license agreement with Microsoft Corporation.
Under this agreement, students may use the following software at no cost to them while they are enrolled at the University.
①Windows OS (downgrade/upgrade)
②Microsoft Office (Windows version/Mac version)
*Please check the website of the Center for Comprehensive Information and Media for details. If you have any questions, please contact us through the Contact Us page.
4. For those who have difficulty providing a laptop computer due to financial circumstances
- Ehime University will loan a Windows laptop computer free of charge for one year to students who are unable to own a laptop computer due to financial circumstances and who wish to use it. (Extension is possible upon application.)
- Loans are available only to those who have applied for an entrance fee waiver (those who are candidates for or are in the process of applying for the Japan Student Services Organization (Ehime University) scholarship, and those who plan to apply for the scholarship after admission). Applicants should contact the department in charge of the following department by e-mail.
5. Preparation required after the purchase of a laptop computer and prior to enrollment
After purchasing a notebook computer, please be sure to start it up once to check for any initial defects (e.g., no power, no display, keyboard not responding, etc.). Note that the first time a laptop computer (new or otherwise) is started up, it must be initially configured (initial setup).
Please refer to the following page for information on how to set up your notebook computer, including the initial setup.
<Ehime University Information and Media Center Website
In addition to the above, information on the laptop computer you will need to prepare before entering the university can also be found on the official Ehime University website.
6. About the PC Setup Support Desk
We have a “PC Setup Support Desk” that provides support for setting up laptop computers, installing Microsoft Office, Wi-Fi connections, etc. If you have any questions about computer settings, please feel free to contact us.
In addition, a special PC setup support site will be set up from April 2 (Wed.) to 15 (Tue.), 2025.
